A colostomy bag is a pouching device that collects stool from a stoma on the abdomen. A stoma is an opening created during colostomy surgery that brings part of the colon to the surface of the skin. Good colostomy bag care helps prevent leaks, odor, and skin irritation. The skin around the stoma should be cleaned gently and checked for redness, breakdown, or rash during changes. A poor seal, wrong opening size, creases, or overfilled pouch can cause leakage. Bleeding from the stoma, severe skin breakdown, black or pale stoma color, no output with pain, fever, or vomiting should be reported promptly.
A properly sealed pouch should control odor most of the time. Odor may occur during emptying, leakage, poor seal, or certain foods.

Many people can shower with or without the pouch depending on comfort and care instructions. The pouching system should be checked afterward for seal security.
