What Does 20/20 Vision Mean?

20/20 vision is a visual acuity score from an eye chart test at 20 feet. It means you can read the line that a standard eye is expected to read at that same distance. It measures sharpness of detail, not the full quality of vision. You can have 20/20 and still have glare, dry eye symptoms, or eye disease.

How the 20/20 Number Works

The first number is the testing distance, which is 20 feet in this system. The second number is the distance where a ?standard? eye could read the same line. If you have 20/40, it means you must be at 20 feet to see what a standard eye sees at 40 feet. Lower second numbers like 20/15 are better than 20/20.

What 20/20 Does Not Measure

It does not measure side vision, depth perception, or night vision quality. It also does not measure how comfortable your eyes feel during long screen time. Color vision, contrast sensitivity, and glare are separate parts of vision. Eye health still needs a full exam, even with a good chart score.

Why Your Score Can Change

Dry eyes can blur letters and lower the score on a bad day. Lighting, fatigue, and pupil size can also affect performance. A small glasses or contact lens change can shift your score too. This is why doctors look at trends and symptoms, not one test result.

When to Get Checked

Get an eye exam if your acuity score drops or if you notice new blur, distortion, or eye pain. Call right away for flashes, a sudden burst of floaters, or a curtain-like shadow in vision. Sudden double vision or sudden vision loss is also urgent. Routine eye exams help catch issues early.

Frequently Asked Questions About 20/20 Vision

Is 20/20 the same as perfect vision?

No. It only describes sharpness on a high-contrast chart at one distance. Perfect vision would also involve good contrast, comfortable focus, and healthy eyes.

Can you have better than 20/20?

Yes. Some people test at 20/15 or 20/10. It means they can read smaller letters at 20 feet than the standard 20/20 line.

Why do I feel blurry if I test 20/20?

Glare, dry eye, focusing issues, and astigmatism can cause symptoms even when the chart looks fine. Contrast sensitivity is also different from chart sharpness. An exam can find the cause.

Does 20/20 mean your eyes are healthy?

No. Many eye problems do not affect early chart scores. Eye pressure checks and retina exams still matter for eye health.
