What Materials Are Needed To Check The Blind Spot?

To successfully check the blind spot, only a few common materials are needed: a piece of white paper, a dark pen or marker, and a measuring ruler. The test relies on isolating the visual input of one eye while controlling the distance between the eye and the image to provide the image falls exactly onto the optic disc.

The procedure requires drawing two distinct markers on the paper, typically a small cross (X) and a dot (?), spaced several inches apart. The cross serves as the fixation point (the point the open eye must stare at continuously), and the dot serves as the target object that will disappear when its image lands on the non-seeing area of the retina.

How To Perform The Blind Spot Test

To perform the test, first draw the markers on the paper. For the right eye's blind spot, draw the cross (X) on the left side of the paper and the dot (?) on the right side, spaced approximately 6 to 8 inches apart. Hold the paper directly in front of you.

Next, close your left eye and focus your right eye only on the cross (X). While keeping your eye fixed on the cross, slowly move the paper closer to your face while monitoring the dot in your peripheral vision. At a certain distance (usually between 10 and 15 inches), the dot will completely disappear from view. This moment signifies that the dot's image has landed exactly on your optic disc.
