What Is Water Gradient Technology?

Water Gradient Technology is an Alcon contact lens material design in which water content increases from the silicone hydrogel core toward the outer lens surface. In TOTAL30 lenses, including Total30 Multifocal and Total30 for Astigmatism, Alcon reports 55% water in the core and nearly 100% water at the outermost surface based on in vitro measurements of unworn lenses. The high-water surface forms a soft, lubricious interface between the lens and the eyelids and ocular surface. The same general Water Gradient concept is also used across other lenses in Alcon's TOTAL family.

Why Is Water Gradient Technology Used in Contact Lenses?

Water Gradient Technology is designed to combine a highly breathable silicone hydrogel core with a much more water-rich outer surface. The core handles much of the structural and oxygen-transmission role, while the surface is engineered for softness, lubricity, and moisture at the eye-facing interface. In TOTAL30, the gradient is designed to remain functional through the monthly replacement period when the lenses are worn and cared for as directed. Comfort still depends on lens fit, tear film, care habits, environment, and individual response.

How Does Water Gradient Technology Work?

The lens does not have one uniform water percentage from center to surface. Instead, its material transitions toward progressively higher water content near the exterior, reaching nearly 100% at the outermost surface in TOTAL30 laboratory measurements. This creates a very soft and water-rich surface while retaining the silicone hydrogel core needed for lens structure and oxygen transmission. TOTAL30 also uses CELLIGENT Technology, a separate surface feature designed to resist deposits and help preserve the Water Gradient through the replacement cycle.

Which Contact Lenses Use Water Gradient Technology?

Water Gradient Technology is used across Alcon's TOTAL contact lens family. TOTAL30 applies the technology to reusable monthly lenses, including sphere, multifocal, toric, and newer multifocal-toric versions where available. DAILIES TOTAL1 also uses a Water Gradient material in a daily disposable format. The surrounding lens designs differ by product, but the shared concept is a silicone hydrogel core transitioning to a highly water-rich surface.

What Should Wearers Know About Water Gradient Technology?

Water Gradient Technology describes the lens material and surface structure rather than the prescription or fitting characteristics. TOTAL30 lenses are approved for daily wear only and require correct fitting, nightly removal, cleaning, disinfection, storage, and monthly replacement. The technology does not prevent all dryness, deposits, infection, or irritation associated with contact lens wear. Wearers who develop redness, pain, light sensitivity, discharge, or sudden vision changes should remove their lenses and contact an eye care professional promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Gradient Technology

How much water is at the surface of TOTAL30 lenses?

Alcon reports that water content approaches 100% at the outermost surface of TOTAL30 based on in vitro measurements of unworn lenses.

What is the core water content of TOTAL30?

Alcon lists a 55% core water content for TOTAL30 contact lenses.

Is Water Gradient Technology only used in TOTAL30?

No. Alcon also uses Water Gradient Technology in DAILIES TOTAL1, while TOTAL30 applies the concept to a reusable monthly lens family.

Is Water Gradient Technology the same as CELLIGENT Technology?

No. Water Gradient refers to the change in water content toward the lens surface, while CELLIGENT is a separate TOTAL30 surface technology associated with deposit resistance.
