Types of Adaptation

Dark Adaptation (increased sensitivity in dim light) involves the regeneration of rod photopigments. Light Adaptation (decreased sensitivity in bright light) is faster and involves pupil constriction and cone pigment adjustment.

The primary mechanisms involve changes in pupil size and photochemical changes in the photoreceptors (rods and cones), which alter the amount of light energy required to trigger a response.

Impact of Age

Dark adaptation slows significantly with age, making it more difficult for older individuals to see when transitioning from a bright to a dark environment.

What is the Purkinje Shift?
