Function

The tint's primary function is to reduce the overall light energy entering the eye. The color and darkness of the tint determine which wavelengths are reduced most efficiently.

Color Options

Gray/G15 tints reduce all colors equally, maintaining color fidelity. Brown/Amber tints enhance contrast by filtering blue light. Yellow tints enhance contrast in low light but are not suitable for bright sunlight.

UV Requirement

Crucially, the tint level has no relationship to UV protection. High-quality tinted sunglasses must be verified to provide $100\%$ blockage of UVA and UVB radiation, regardless of the tint darkness.

Are brown or gray better for driving?

Gray is generally preferred as it minimally alters natural colors. Brown/Amber can enhance contrast, which some drivers prefer, but may slightly alter traffic light recognition.

What is a 'gradient tint'?

A gradient tint is darker at the top of the lens and gradually lighter toward the bottom, ideal for driving (dark top shields sun, light bottom allows viewing dashboard).

Are tinted lenses polarized?

They can be. Polarization is a separate technology added to a tinted lens to filter out horizontally reflected glare (e.g., from water or roads).
