What Is the Visual Cortex?
The visual cortex is the part of the brain in the occipital lobe that processes signals from the eyes. Primary visual cortex (V1) detects basic edges and contrast, while higher areas interpret color, motion, depth, and object identity. Information flows along ventral (what) and dorsal (where/how) pathways. The brain blends both eye inputs to build a stable scene. Injury here can cause specific visual field losses or recognition problems.
