What Is a Storage Lens Case?

A storage lens case is a container used to hold and disinfect contact lenses when they are not in use. While it seems simple, the case is a critical component of eye safety. A dirty case can become a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to serious eye infections like keratitis if not managed properly.

What is a biofilm and why is it dangerous?

A biofilm is a microscopic layer of bacteria that adheres to the plastic surface:

  • It protects bacteria from the disinfecting solution.
  • It can transfer pathogens directly onto your lenses.
  • It is often invisible to the naked eye but highly infectious.

How should you clean your case daily?

After you put your lenses in, empty all old solution. Rinse the case wells with fresh disinfecting solution and leave the case upside down on a clean tissue to air dry. Removing moisture is the best way to kill any remaining bacteria.

When should you replace your lens case?

The consensus among eye care professionals is to replace your lens case every one to three months. Even with diligent cleaning, microscopic scratches in the plastic can harbor bacteria that are impossible to remove, increasing your risk of infection.

Are there different cases for different solutions?

Yes. Multi purpose solutions use flat cases, while hydrogen peroxide systems require a tall vial with a neutralizing disc. Using a peroxide solution in a flat case will not neutralize the acid, causing a severe chemical burn upon insertion.

Frequently Asked Questions About Storage Lens Cases

Can I wash my case with water?

No. Tap water can introduce parasites like Acanthamoeba. Only use fresh contact lens solution to rinse your case wells before air drying.

Why should I dry my case?

Most bacteria that cause eye infections thrive in moist environments. Air drying the case effectively starves these organisms of the moisture they need to multiply.

How often should I get a new case?

Every 90 days at maximum. A good habit is to use the new case provided every time you purchase a fresh bottle of contact lens solution.
