What Is Palpation?

Palpation is the clinical technique of using the hands to feel tissues and structures. In eye care it helps assess orbital tenderness, eyelid masses, or approximate eye pressure when instruments are not available. Gentle pressure and comparison between sides guide interpretation. It complements visual inspection and imaging.

How Do Clinicians Use Palpation Around the Eye?

Examining the lids can reveal chalazia, preseptal swelling, or crepitus after injury. Orbital rim palpation checks for step offs that suggest fracture. Palpating the globe through closed lids offers a rough sense of firmness but is avoided when injury is suspected. Findings are always weighed alongside other tests.

Why Lid Palpation Remains a Useful Screening Tool

Touch helps identify tenderness, hidden swelling, or structural irregularities. Even small asymmetries can hint at early infection or trauma. Because the technique is quick, it gives immediate context before imaging. Careful technique avoids pressure when deeper injury is possible.

Is Palpation Reliable for Eye Pressure?

Digital palpation gives only a crude estimate and cannot replace tonometry. It helps in triage or when corneal contact is unsafe. Training improves consistency but precision remains limited. Objective tools are preferred whenever possible.

When Should Palpation Be Avoided?

A suspected open globe, recent surgery, or active infection are situations where pressure on the eye is risky. In those cases clinicians rely on imaging and non contact evaluation. Safety comes first to prevent further damage. Clear warning signs prompt a hands off approach.

What Can Palpation Reveal Beyond Pressure?

The technique can detect warmth, fluctuance, or pulsation that suggests inflammation, abscess, or vascular issues. It also maps tenderness that directs further testing. Combined with history, these clues shape the differential diagnosis. Subtle symmetry differences often matter.

FAQs: Palpation

Is palpation painful? It should not be; any pain is noted as a finding.

Do I need numbing drops? No for external palpation.

Can patients self palpate? Self testing is not recommended for pressure checks.
