What Is Nuclear Sclerosis?
Nuclear sclerosis is gradual hardening and yellowing of the central part of the crystalline lens, known as the nucleus. It is a very common age related change and forms the basis of many nuclear cataracts. As new lens fibers are added over time, older central fibers become compressed, dehydrated, and more densely packed. The lens becomes less flexible and less clear, which can affect focusing ability and visual quality. Mild nuclear sclerosis is often present before people notice any symptoms.
