Underlying Cause

It is caused by the displacement of photoreceptors in the macula, most commonly due to fluid accumulation (macular edema) or the pulling effect of membranes (epiretinal membrane or Macular Pucker).

Amsler Grid Test

The Amsler Grid is a diagnostic tool used to check for metamorphopsia. Patients look at a central dot, and if the surrounding grid lines appear wavy, it suggests macular pathology.

Related Conditions

The most common causes include Wet (Exudative) Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSC), and Vitreomacular Traction.

Can glasses correct it?

No. Metamorphopsia is a sensory distortion caused by retinal warping, not a refractive error, so glasses cannot correct the perceived waviness.

Is it always severe?

No. It can range from very subtle, where only thin lines appear slightly crooked, to severe, where the entire central visual field is dramatically warped.

Is it permanent?

It can be reversible if the underlying cause (like fluid from CSC) resolves naturally or is treated successfully (like injecting anti-VEGF for Wet AMD).
