What Is Lens Hardening (Nuclear Sclerosis)?
Lens hardening, or nuclear sclerosis, is a gradual age related change in which the central part of the crystalline lens becomes denser and less flexible. The nucleus takes on a yellow or brown hue and its refractive index changes. This process reduces the lens's ability to change shape, contributing to presbyopia and altered focus. Many adults also notice a slow shift toward nearsightedness as nuclear sclerosis progresses. It is a common early stage of age related cataract but can exist for years before surgery is needed.
