What Is the Lens Cortex?
The lens cortex is the outer part of the eye's natural lens, sitting around the central lens nucleus. It is made mostly of clear lens fibers that are packed tightly to help bend light. Together with the nucleus, it helps focus images onto the retina for clear vision. Over time, the cortex can change in texture and clarity, especially as the lens ages. When the cortex becomes cloudy, it can contribute to a type of cataract called a cortical cataract.
