Plate Structure

Each plate is a pseudoisochromatic plate, meaning it contains a number or shape composed of dots of one color, embedded within dots of a different, confusing color.

Diagnostic Principle

Individuals with normal color vision can easily distinguish the figure from the background. Those with red-green deficiencies (Deuteranopia or Protanopia) cannot see the embedded figure or see a different number.

Administration

The test must be administered under standard daylight illumination. The patient reads the number they perceive on each plate, with the inability to read certain numbers indicating a specific deficiency type.

Does it detect blue-yellow deficiency?

The standard Ishihara test is designed only to detect red-green deficiencies. Other tests, like the Farnsworth D-15, are required for blue-yellow deficiencies (Tritanopia).

Is it used to diagnose severity?

Yes, by analyzing which plates a patient fails, the test can provide an estimate of the severity of the red-green color vision deficiency.

Who invented the test?

The test was named after its inventor, Dr. Shinobu Ishihara, a Japanese ophthalmologist, who published the plates in 1917.
