Protection Level

These filters are rated into Class 1 (blocks over 90% of UVA and 99% of UVB) and Class 2 (blocks over 70% of UVA and 95% of UVB), with Class 1 offering the highest protection.

Limitation

Crucially, contact lenses only cover the cornea and iris. They do not protect the surrounding eyelid skin, conjunctiva, or the white of the eye (sclera) from UV exposure.

Recommendation

Even when wearing UV-blocking contact lenses, patients are still strongly advised to wear UV-blocking sunglasses to protect the exposed periorbital tissues.

Can I use UV-blocking contacts for sun gazing?

Absolutely not. They are not strong enough to protect the macula from solar retinopathy; only certified solar filters are safe for direct sun viewing.

Does the UV filter change the lens color?

No. The UV-absorbing agents are transparent to visible light and do not affect the lens color or the wearer's vision.

Is this standard on all contact lenses?

No. While many popular brands incorporate UV filters, it is not a universal feature and should be verified before purchase.
