What Is Hypospadias Repair?

Hypospadias repair is surgery for a condition in which the urethral opening is on the underside of the penis instead of at its tip. The surgeon reconstructs the urinary channel and moves its opening closer to or onto the tip. The operation may also straighten a downward curve of the penis when present. The surgical plan depends on the location of the opening and the available tissue.

When Is Hypospadias Repair Considered?

A pediatric urologist assesses the position of the urinary opening, the urine stream, and any penile curvature. Repair is commonly performed in infancy or early childhood, with the timing tailored to the child. Some mild cases may not require an operation. Parents should avoid circumcision until a specialist has evaluated the child, since foreskin tissue may be useful for repair.

How Is Hypospadias Repair Performed?

Under anesthesia, the surgeon uses local tissue to create or extend the urethral channel toward the tip of the penis. The surgeon may also straighten the penis and reshape the surrounding tissue. Some complex cases require more than one operation. A temporary catheter or stent may be placed to drain urine while the repair heals.

What Happens During Recovery?

Swelling and bruising can occur around the surgical site. If a catheter or stent was placed, the care team explains how to keep it draining and when it will be removed. Parents receive instructions for wound care, bathing, and diaper changes or activity limits. Follow-up visits check healing and the urine stream.

What Are the Risks of Hypospadias Repair?

Urine may leak through an unintended opening along the repaired urethra, called a fistula. The new urinary opening or channel can narrow and affect the urine stream. Infection, bleeding, and wound-healing problems are also possible. Some complications require another operation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hypospadias Repair

When is hypospadias repair usually performed?

When surgery is indicated, it is commonly planned during infancy or early childhood. A pediatric urologist recommends the timing for the individual child.

Should a baby with hypospadias be circumcised before repair?

Parents should wait until a pediatric urologist evaluates the child. The surgeon may need foreskin tissue for the repair.

Will the child need a catheter after surgery?

Some repairs require a temporary catheter or stent to drain urine during healing. The surgeon will explain whether one is needed and how to care for it.

Can hypospadias repair require another surgery?

Yes. A complex repair may be planned in stages, and a complication such as a fistula or narrowing may require further treatment.
