What Is Gustatory Lacrimation?
Gustatory lacrimation occurs when the eyes water during eating, especially with strong or spicy flavors. The reflex happens when nerve fibers meant for salivary glands mistakenly activate tear glands. Some people experience mild moisture, while others have noticeable overflow. It can follow facial nerve injury or develop from congenital wiring patterns. Exams help determine whether nerve misdirection is present.
