Glare (Disability Glare)

Excessive bright light that causes difficulty seeing or pain, resulting from light scattering off the ocular media (cornea, lens) or off small particulates in the air.

Flare (Halo Effect)

Light that scatters from bright sources (like headlights) into a large, hazy circular pattern or streak. It is often a side effect of refractive surgery or early cataract formation.

Causes in the Eye

Increased light scatter can be due to cataracts, corneal scarring, dry eye syndrome, or defects in the shape of the cornea after certain surgeries.

Is glare always bad for vision?

No, there is also 'discomfort glare' (annoying, but doesn't affect vision) and 'disability glare' (which significantly reduces the ability to see details).

Why is glare worse at night?

At night, the pupil dilates (opens wide), allowing more peripheral light and scattered rays to enter the eye, increasing the effect of glare.

Does wearing a hat help with glare?

Yes, a hat brim can significantly reduce 'direct glare' from the sun or overhead light sources, improving comfort.
