How Does Doxycycline Hyclate Work?

Doxycycline hyclate releases doxycycline, which binds to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit and blocks protein synthesis. The resulting activity is primarily bacteriostatic against susceptible organisms. Cross-resistance with other tetracyclines is common, so antibacterial use is reserved for proven or strongly suspected susceptible infections.

Which Conditions Are Treated With Doxycycline Hyclate?

Doxycycline hyclate treats selected rickettsial, respiratory, sexually transmitted, ophthalmic, and other bacterial infections. It is also used for anthrax after exposure, selected infections when penicillin is contraindicated, adjunctive treatment of severe acne, and malaria prophylaxis for short-term travelers to areas with specified resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains.

How Is Doxycycline Hyclate Dosed?

Adults commonly receive 200 mg on the first day as 100 mg every 12 hours, followed by 100 mg daily. More severe infections use 100 mg every 12 hours. Adult malaria prophylaxis uses 100 mg once daily beginning one or two days before travel, throughout travel, and for four weeks after leaving the area.

What Serious Risks Are Linked to Doxycycline Hyclate?

Doxycycline hyclate can cause permanent tooth discoloration during tooth development, reversible inhibition of bone growth, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, photosensitivity, intracranial hypertension, severe skin reactions, hypersensitivity, esophagitis, and esophageal ulceration. Taking capsules or tablets with adequate fluid reduces esophageal irritation risk.
