Classification of Distortion

Includes xanthopsia (everything appears yellow) and cyanopsia (everything appears blue), often temporary side effects of certain medications.

Common Causes

Typically acquired due to diseases affecting the retina (like age-related macular degeneration), the optic nerve (optic neuritis), or side effects from drugs (e.g., Digitalis).

Prognosis

Unlike inherited color blindness, acquired color vision distortion may be temporary or reversible if the underlying condition or medication is treated.

Is this the same as color blindness?

No. Color blindness is an inability to distinguish specific colors (a genetic issue), while distortion means existing colors are seen with incorrect hues (an acquired issue).

What is the term for red distortion?

Erythropsia (everything appears reddish) is a form of distortion, sometimes seen after exposure to bright snow or certain retinal conditions.

What is the medical term for it?

The general term for acquired color vision abnormality is dyschromatopsia.
