How Does Delzicol Act in the Colon?

The exact mechanism of mesalamine is not fully defined and appears to be mainly topical in the colon. Mesalamine can reduce production of inflammatory arachidonic acid metabolites, including prostaglandins, within colonic tissue. This local anti-inflammatory activity helps control ulcerative colitis.

Who Is Treated With Delzicol?

Delzicol treats mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis in adults and children age 5 and older. It is also approved to maintain remission of ulcerative colitis in adults. Pediatric treatment uses weight-based dosing and is divided into two daily doses for six weeks.

How Are Delzicol Capsules Dosed?

Adults with active ulcerative colitis take 800 mg three times daily for six weeks. Pediatric patients age 5 and older use weight-based twice-daily dosing up to 2.4 g daily. Adult maintenance dosing is 1.6 g daily in two to four divided doses. Capsules can be taken with or without food.

What Serious Risks Are Linked to Delzicol?

Serious concerns include kidney impairment, acute intolerance syndrome, hypersensitivity reactions, liver failure, severe skin reactions, photosensitivity, and kidney stones. Kidney function is checked before treatment and periodically during therapy. Adequate fluid intake lowers the risk of mesalamine-containing kidney stones.
