How Does Decadron Reduce Inflammation?

Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid that changes gene transcription after binding intracellular glucocorticoid receptors. Corticosteroid activity suppresses inflammatory and immune responses across numerous tissues. Dexamethasone has strong glucocorticoid activity with very little sodium-retaining activity compared with hydrocortisone at equivalent anti-inflammatory doses.

Which Conditions Are Treated With Decadron?

Dexamethasone labeling includes severe allergic disorders, selected skin diseases, endocrine disorders, acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis, cerebral edema, rheumatic disorders, selected respiratory diseases, inflammatory bowel disease during severe episodes, nephrotic syndrome, selected eye inflammation, blood disorders, and palliative treatment of leukemias and lymphomas.

How Is Decadron Elixir Dosed?

Oral dexamethasone dosing is individualized according to the disease and clinical response. Current Decadron elixir labeling states that initial dosing commonly ranges from 0.75 mg to 9 mg daily, though lower or higher doses can be used for specific conditions. After improvement, the dose is reduced gradually to the lowest dose that maintains the needed response.

What Serious Risks Are Linked to Decadron?

Systemic dexamethasone can suppress adrenal function and increase susceptibility to infection. Other risks include high blood glucose, fluid and electrolyte changes, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, mood or psychiatric changes, cataracts, glaucoma, impaired wound healing, and growth suppression in children. Long-term treatment is generally tapered rather than stopped abruptly.
