Why Is Cubital Tunnel Release Performed?

Surgery is considered when numbness, tingling, weakness, or hand dysfunction from ulnar nerve compression persists despite nonsurgical care. It can also be recommended when testing or examination shows severe compression, muscle weakness, or muscle wasting. The goal is to stop ongoing nerve injury and create conditions for recovery. Longstanding severe nerve damage is less likely to recover completely even after successful decompression.

How Is Cubital Tunnel Release Performed?

The surgeon makes an incision near the inside of the elbow and identifies the ulnar nerve. The tissue forming the roof of the cubital tunnel is divided to release compression along the nerve. The surgeon checks whether the nerve remains stable when the elbow bends and straightens. When instability, tension, scarring, or another anatomical factor is present, the nerve can be moved to a new position in front of the medial epicondyle.

What Is Recovery Like After Cubital Tunnel Release?

Most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, and elbow movement often begins soon after simple decompression. A splint can be used for a longer period when the nerve is transposed beneath muscle or when another procedure is performed. Incisional soreness improves before numbness, weakness, and fine motor function because nerves recover slowly. Heavy lifting and repetitive elbow stress are restricted until the surgical team determines that healing is adequate.

What Are the Risks and Complications?

Possible complications include infection, bleeding, painful scarring, stiffness, persistent numbness, and injury to the ulnar nerve or nearby sensory nerves. Symptoms can continue when nerve damage was advanced before surgery or when compression exists at another site. The ulnar nerve can remain unstable or develop scar-related irritation after decompression. Some patients require revision surgery when symptoms recur or the initial decompression is incomplete.
