How Does Clobex Reduce Inflammation?

Clobetasol propionate has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive activity. The precise anti-inflammatory mechanism of topical corticosteroids is unclear. Corticosteroids are thought to increase proteins that reduce production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

How Do Clobex Formulations Differ?

Clobex shampoo is used on the scalp for moderate to severe scalp psoriasis. Clobex spray is used on affected skin for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis within labeled body surface limits. Clobex lotion is used for selected corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses and localized plaque psoriasis. Each form has its own application instructions and treatment limits.

How Is Clobex Shampoo Used?

Clobex shampoo 0.05% is applied once daily in a thin film to affected areas of a dry scalp. It remains in place for 15 minutes before water is added, then the scalp is lathered and rinsed. Treatment is limited to four consecutive weeks, and total use should not exceed 50 mL per week.

What Serious Risks Are Linked to Clobex?

Clobex can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis through systemic corticosteroid absorption. Other risks include Cushing syndrome, high blood glucose, skin thinning, visible small blood vessels, folliculitis, irritation, allergic contact dermatitis, and secondary skin infection. Several forms are restricted from the face, groin, and underarms.
