When Is Cervicoplasty Considered?

Cervicoplasty may be considered when loose neck skin causes a person concern. A surgeon examines the skin, underlying muscle, and jawline to decide which changes a neck lift can address. The procedure does not treat every cause of fullness beneath the chin.

How Is Cervicoplasty Performed?

The surgeon makes incisions suited to the amount and location of excess skin. Incisions may be placed around the ears and hairline, while a direct neck lift may use an incision on the front of the neck. The surgeon removes or repositions skin and closes the incisions.

What Happens During Recovery?

Swelling, bruising, and tightness can occur after surgery. The surgeon may recommend a supportive dressing and give instructions for incision care and activity. Healing time depends on the extent of the operation and whether other procedures were performed.

What Are the Risks and Limitations?

Possible risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, uneven contours, and changes in skin sensation. A visible scar is more likely when skin is removed through an incision on the front of the neck. Cervicoplasty cannot prevent future changes in skin and tissue with age.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cervicoplasty

Does cervicoplasty tighten neck muscles?

Cervicoplasty addresses excess neck skin. Muscle tightening, called platysmaplasty, may be added when needed.

Where are the scars?

Scar placement depends on the surgical approach. Incisions may be hidden near the ears and hairline or placed on the front of the neck for a direct neck lift.

Can cervicoplasty be combined with a facelift?

Yes. A surgeon may combine the procedures when the neck and lower face both need treatment.

Will cervicoplasty remove a double chin?

It may improve a double chin caused partly by loose skin. Fat or muscle changes may require additional treatment.
