What Is Carotid Artery Stenting?
Carotid artery stenting is a catheter-based procedure used to widen a narrowed carotid artery and support the artery with a metal mesh stent. The carotid arteries carry blood to the brain, and atherosclerotic narrowing can increase the risk of ischemic stroke. Carotid stenting is an alternative to carotid endarterectomy in appropriately selected patients. The procedure is performed with imaging guidance rather than through an open neck incision.
