How Do the Medicines in Breo Ellipta Work?

Fluticasone furoate acts through glucocorticoid receptors and reduces inflammatory activity in the airways. Vilanterol stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle, increasing cyclic AMP and relaxing bronchial muscle. The combination pairs an inhaled corticosteroid with long-acting bronchodilation for ongoing asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treatment.

Who Is Treated With Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta is approved for maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and for maintenance treatment of asthma in patients age 5 and older. It is not used for rapid relief of acute bronchospasm. Sudden breathing symptoms require an inhaled short-acting beta2 agonist prescribed for rescue treatment.

How Is Breo Ellipta Dosed?

Adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease use one inhalation of 100 mcg fluticasone furoate with 25 mcg vilanterol once daily. Adults with asthma use 100 with 25 mcg or 200 with 25 mcg once daily. Patients age 12 to 17 use 100 with 25 mcg, while ages 5 to 11 use 50 with 25 mcg once daily.

What Safety Problems Need Attention With Breo Ellipta?

Breo Ellipta can cause oral candidiasis, pneumonia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, adrenal effects, reduced bone mineral density, glaucoma, cataracts, paradoxical bronchospasm, and cardiovascular effects. Patients rinse the mouth with water without swallowing after inhalation to reduce oral candidiasis risk. The inhaler is not used for acute breathing attacks.
