How Does Beyfortus Block RSV?

Nirsevimab-alip targets the prefusion form of the RSV F protein. It binds a conserved site on that protein and blocks the structural changes RSV needs to fuse with human cell membranes and enter cells. This passive antibody protection lasts about five months after a recommended dose.

Who Receives Beyfortus?

Beyfortus is used in newborns and infants born during or entering their first RSV season. It is also used in children up to 24 months who remain at increased risk for severe RSV disease through their second season. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children older than 24 months.

How Is Beyfortus Dosed?

During the first RSV season, infants under 5 kg receive 50 mg and those weighing 5 kg or more receive 100 mg as one intramuscular injection. Children entering a second RSV season who remain at increased risk receive 200 mg as two 100 mg injections. Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass can call for another dose after surgery.

What Safety Problems Need Attention With Beyfortus?

Serious hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported after Beyfortus. Reactions have included hives, breathing difficulty, bluish skin color, and reduced muscle tone. Intramuscular injection also requires caution in infants and children with thrombocytopenia, clotting disorders, or anticoagulant treatment due bleeding risk.
