How Does Topical Betamethasone Reduce Skin Inflammation?

Corticosteroids affect cellular signaling, immune activity, inflammation, and protein regulation. The precise mechanism of topical betamethasone dipropionate in corticosteroid-responsive skin disorders is not fully defined. Its glucocorticoid activity reduces inflammatory responses in treated skin and relieves symptoms such as redness and itching.

Which Skin Conditions Are Treated With Topical Betamethasone?

Augmented betamethasone dipropionate cream 0.05% is approved for inflammatory and itchy manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses in patients age 13 and older. The label does not name one single skin disease, since several responsive dermatoses fit this category. It is not intended for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use.

How Is Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream Applied?

A thin film is applied to affected skin once or twice daily. Treatment stops when control is reached. Use should not exceed 50 g per week. The cream is not used with occlusive dressings unless directed by a physician, and use on the face, groin, armpits, or areas with skin atrophy is avoided.

What Safety Problems Are Linked to Topical Betamethasone?

High-potency topical betamethasone can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, especially with large treatment areas, prolonged use, occlusion, or damaged skin. Other risks include skin atrophy, allergic contact dermatitis, cataracts, glaucoma, increased eye pressure, Cushing syndrome, and high blood sugar. Use in patients younger than 13 is not recommended for the augmented cream.
