How Does Benadryl Block Allergy Symptoms?

Diphenhydramine blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine contributes to sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and nasal symptoms during allergic reactions. Blocking H1 receptor activity reduces these symptoms. Diphenhydramine also enters the central nervous system, which accounts for its sedating effects.

Adults and children age 12 and older take one or two 25 mg capsules every four to six hours. Children age 6 to under 12 take one capsule every four to six hours. No more than six doses are taken within 24 hours. The current product label states not to use these capsules in children younger than 6.

Benadryl can cause marked drowsiness and reduced alertness. Alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers increase this effect.
