How Does Basaglar Lower Blood Glucose?

Insulin glargine lowers blood glucose by increasing glucose uptake into skeletal muscle and fat while reducing glucose production by the liver. It also inhibits breakdown of fat and protein. After injection under the skin, insulin glargine forms a depot that releases insulin slowly, producing a prolonged glucose-lowering profile suited to once-daily basal insulin treatment.

Who Is Treated With Basaglar?

Basaglar is approved to improve glycemic control in adults and pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes and adults with type 2 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes use Basaglar together with short-acting insulin for meal-related insulin needs. It is not recommended for diabetic ketoacidosis, which requires a different treatment approach.

How Is Basaglar Dosed?

Basaglar is injected under the skin once daily at the same time each day. For type 1 diabetes, a starting dose is about one-third of total daily insulin needs, with short-acting insulin used for the remainder. For adults with type 2 diabetes who are not using insulin, the starting dose is 0.2 units per kg or up to 10 units once daily.

What Safety Problems Need Attention With Basaglar?

Hypoglycemia is the most common serious risk with insulin treatment. Other concerns include medication errors, severe allergic reactions, low blood potassium, lipodystrophy, localized cutaneous amyloidosis, and heart failure when insulin is taken with thiazolidinediones. Injection sites are rotated within the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm region to reduce local tissue changes.
