How Does Baqsimi Raise Blood Glucose?

Glucagon activates receptors in the liver and stimulates breakdown of stored glycogen. This releases glucose from the liver into the bloodstream and raises blood glucose concentration. Adequate liver glycogen stores are needed for this action, so glucagon has reduced usefulness during starvation, adrenal insufficiency, or chronic hypoglycemia with depleted glycogen stores.

Who Uses Baqsimi for Severe Hypoglycemia?

Baqsimi is approved for treatment of severe hypoglycemia in adults and pediatric patients age 1 and older with diabetes. A caregiver or other person can administer the dose when the patient cannot safely treat the low blood sugar alone. Emergency medical assistance is contacted immediately after administration.

How Is a Baqsimi Dose Given?

One 3 mg dose is sprayed into one nostril using the single-use device. The patient does not need to inhale the powder. If there is no response after 15 minutes, another 3 mg dose from a new device can be given while emergency help is on the way. Oral carbohydrates are given after the patient responds and can swallow safely.

What Safety Problems Need Attention With Baqsimi?

Baqsimi is contraindicated in people with pheochromocytoma, insulinoma, or prior serious hypersensitivity to glucagon or its ingredients. Serious allergic reactions have been reported. Common reactions include nausea, vomiting, headache, nasal discomfort, nasal congestion, cough, nosebleed, watery eyes, and eye redness. Glucagon can raise blood pressure sharply in people with pheochromocytoma.
