How Does Bacitracin Topical Act Against Bacteria?

Bacitracin interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking recycling of a lipid carrier needed to move peptidoglycan building blocks across the cell membrane. This disrupts formation of the bacterial cell wall. The drug has its strongest activity against susceptible gram-positive bacteria and acts locally when applied to the skin.

When Is Bacitracin Topical Used?

Over-the-counter bacitracin zinc ointment is labeled as first aid to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It is not intended for the eyes or for routine use over large areas of the body. Deep puncture wounds, animal bites, and serious burns require medical advice before use.

How Is Bacitracin Ointment Applied?

The affected skin is cleaned and dried before application. A small amount of ointment is placed on the area one to three times daily. The treated area can be covered with a sterile bandage. Use longer than one week requires direction from a doctor under current over-the-counter labeling.

What Reactions Can Occur With Bacitracin Topical?

Rash and allergic reactions can occur with topical bacitracin. Treatment is stopped and medical advice is sought if the condition worsens, persists, or an allergic reaction develops. The ointment should not be used by people allergic to its ingredients and should be kept away from the eyes and large body areas.
