How Does Azelastine Block Allergy Symptoms?

Azelastine blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is one of the mediators involved in allergic symptoms such as sneezing, nasal itching, runny nose, and itchy eyes. Azelastine also has activity involving other mediators released during allergic responses. Its local nasal and ophthalmic forms act at the sites where allergy symptoms occur.

Which Allergy Conditions Are Treated With Azelastine?

Azelastine 0.1 percent nasal spray treats seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients age 5 and older and vasomotor rhinitis in patients age 12 and older. Azelastine 0.05 percent eye drops treat itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. The eye drops are not intended for irritation caused by contact lens wear.

How Are Azelastine Nasal Spray and Eye Drops Used?

For seasonal allergic rhinitis, patients age 12 and older use one or two nasal sprays per nostril twice daily, while ages 5 to 11 use one spray per nostril twice daily. Vasomotor rhinitis uses two sprays per nostril twice daily for ages 12 and older. Eye drops are instilled as one drop in each affected eye twice daily.

What Side Effects Can Occur With Azelastine?

Nasal azelastine can cause bitter taste, headache, sleepiness, nasal burning, dry mouth, dizziness, and nosebleeds. Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants can worsen drowsiness and reduced alertness. Azelastine eye drops can cause temporary eye irritation. The dropper tip should not touch the eye, eyelids, or nearby surfaces.
