How Does Arimidex Lower Estrogen?

Anastrozole inhibits aromatase, the enzyme that converts adrenal androgens into estrogens in peripheral tissues after menopause. Lower estrogen concentrations reduce hormonal stimulation of breast cancer cells that depend on estrogen signaling. Arimidex does not have progestogenic, androgenic, or estrogenic activity at therapeutic doses.

Which Breast Cancers Are Treated With Arimidex?

Arimidex is used in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer after initial treatment. It is also approved as first-line therapy for hormone receptor-positive or receptor-unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer and for advanced disease that progresses after tamoxifen treatment.

How Should Arimidex Tablets Be Taken?

The recommended dose is one 1 mg tablet by mouth once daily, with or without food. For advanced breast cancer, treatment continues until tumor progression. No dose adjustment is required for kidney impairment or mild to moderate liver impairment. Arimidex has not been studied in severe liver impairment.

What Health Risks Need Monitoring With Arimidex?

Arimidex can reduce bone mineral density and raise fracture risk. Other concerns include higher cholesterol and ischemic cardiovascular events in women with pre-existing ischemic heart disease. The medicine can harm a fetus. Common reactions include hot flashes, joint symptoms, weakness, depression, nausea, headache, osteoporosis, and back pain.
