The same vaginal system is inserted for 21 continuous days and then removed for 7 days. This 28-day pattern is repeated for thirteen cycles. The system is washed with mild soap and water, rinsed, and dried before each insertion and at each removal. It is stored in its case during the 7-day interval.
Annovera is contraindicated in females with several conditions that raise cardiovascular, clotting, liver, or hormone-sensitive cancer risks. Females over age 35 who smoke should not use it. Other contraindications include current or past blood clots, certain migraine patterns, uncontrolled hypertension, certain diabetes complications, breast cancer, severe liver disease, and unexplained uterine bleeding.
Annovera carries a boxed warning about cigarette smoking and serious cardiovascular events in females over age 35. Combined hormonal contraceptives also raise the risk of venous blood clots and arterial events. Other concerns include high blood pressure, liver problems, gallbladder disease, abnormal bleeding, headaches, and changes in glucose or lipids. Headache, nausea, vaginal infection, and abdominal pain are common reactions.
