How Does AndroGel Replace Testosterone?

AndroGel contains testosterone that passes through the skin into the bloodstream after topical application. Testosterone replacement restores circulating testosterone in men whose bodies do not produce enough due to testicular disorders or disorders affecting pituitary or hypothalamic signaling. Different topical testosterone products are not interchangeable due to differences in concentration, dose, and application site.

Who Is AndroGel Prescribed For?

AndroGel is approved for adult men with testosterone deficiency or absence linked to testicular failure or deficient pituitary or hypothalamic signaling. Its safety and efficacy for age-related low testosterone have not been established. It is not approved for males younger than 18 or for use in women.

How Is AndroGel Applied?

Application depends on the formulation. AndroGel 1.62 percent commonly starts at 40.5 mg once each morning on clean, dry skin of the shoulders and upper arms. AndroGel 1 percent commonly starts at 50 mg each morning on the shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen. Hands are washed after application, and treated skin is covered after the gel dries.

What Major Risks Come With AndroGel?

AndroGel carries a boxed warning for secondary testosterone exposure in children, which has caused virilization. Other concerns include increased red blood cell concentration, blood clots, worsening prostate symptoms, increased blood pressure, swelling, reduced sperm production, sleep apnea, and misuse. The gel is flammable until dry. Skin contact with untreated application sites should be avoided.
