What Are Injectable Suspensions Used For?

Examples include selected corticosteroids, long-acting antipsychotics, contraceptives, antibiotics, and vaccines. How Do Injectable Suspensions Work?

After injection, fluid around the solid particles dissolves a portion of the drug. Dissolved drug is then absorbed into nearby tissues or the bloodstream. Particle size, crystal form, vehicle, concentration, and injection site influence the release rate. Some suspensions act quickly, while depot suspensions can release medicine over weeks or months.

How Are Injectable Suspensions Prepared and Given?

Some products are supplied ready to use, while others are powders that require reconstitution with a specified diluent. The container is mixed according to the label so the particles are evenly distributed without damaging the formulation. A suitable needle, syringe, route, and injection technique are selected for the product. The suspension should be inspected for clumps, discoloration, damaged packaging, or incomplete redispersion before use.

What Are the Risks and Safety Considerations?

Incomplete mixing can cause an inaccurate dose because the drug particles are not evenly distributed. Large particles, aggregates, or incorrect injection technique can block a needle or injure tissue. Using the wrong route can cause serious harm, including vascular blockage when a suspension not intended for intravenous use enters a blood vessel. Sterility, storage temperature, expiration, and product-specific handling instructions must be followed closely.
