What Is an Aminoglycoside?
An aminoglycoside is a type of antibiotic used mainly for serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria. These medicines interfere with bacterial protein production and have a rapid bactericidal effect. Examples include gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, streptomycin, neomycin, and plazomicin. Their use is limited by the risk of kidney damage, hearing loss, and other serious adverse effects.
