How Does Amoxicillin Kill Susceptible Bacteria?

Amoxicillin interferes with bacterial cell wall production during active bacterial growth. It binds to proteins involved in building the cell wall, which disrupts cell wall integrity and leads to bacterial death. Beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria can break down amoxicillin and make those organisms resistant to the medicine.

Which Infections Are Treated With Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is labeled for selected bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, genitourinary tract, skin and skin structures, and lower respiratory tract. In adults, it is also used with other medicines to eradicate Helicobacter pylori and reduce recurrence of duodenal ulcer disease. Treatment is reserved for infections proven or strongly suspected to involve susceptible bacteria.

How Is Amoxicillin Dosed?

Dosing depends on age, body weight, infection site, infection severity, kidney function, and formulation. Adult regimens generally total 750 mg to 1750 mg per day in divided doses every 8 to 12 hours. Pediatric patients older than 3 months generally receive 20 mg to 45 mg per kg per day in divided doses. Severe kidney impairment requires dose adjustment.

Which Reactions Need Medical Attention With Amoxicillin?

Serious reactions include anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome, and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea. Common adverse reactions include diarrhea, rash, vomiting, and nausea. People with a history of serious hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or other beta-lactam antibacterials should not take it. A progressive rash, breathing difficulty, or severe persistent diarrhea needs prompt medical assessment.
