What Is Amoxicillin and Clavulanate?

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is a prescription antibacterial combination. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class antibacterial, while clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. The combination is used for selected lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial ear infections, sinusitis, skin and skin structure infections, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Oral forms include tablets, chewable tablets, and suspension.

How Do Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Work Together?

Amoxicillin disrupts bacterial cell wall production and kills susceptible bacteria during active growth. Clavulanate inactivates certain beta-lactamase enzymes that would otherwise break down amoxicillin. Pairing the two ingredients extends antibacterial activity to selected beta-lactamase-producing organisms that are resistant to amoxicillin alone.

Which Infections Are Treated With This Combination?

Current labeling covers selected lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial otitis media, sinusitis, skin and skin structure infections, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria. When testing shows that the infecting organism is susceptible to amoxicillin and does not produce beta-lactamase, the combination should not be used in place of amoxicillin alone.

How Should Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Be Taken?

The medicine is taken at the start of a meal to improve clavulanate absorption and reduce stomach upset. Adult and pediatric doses are based on the amoxicillin component and vary with infection severity, age, body weight, kidney function, and formulation. Tablets with different amoxicillin and clavulanate ratios are not automatically interchangeable, so the prescribed product and strength matter.

What Safety Problems Need Attention During Treatment?

Serious risks include anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome, liver injury, cholestatic jaundice, and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea. Diarrhea or loose stools, nausea, rash, hives, vomiting, and vaginitis are among the more frequently reported adverse reactions. A past episode of cholestatic jaundice or liver dysfunction linked to this combination is a contraindication.

Frequently Asked Questions About Amoxicillin and Clavulanate

Is amoxicillin and clavulanate the same as amoxicillin?

No. The combination contains amoxicillin plus clavulanate, which blocks certain beta-lactamase enzymes.

Should amoxicillin and clavulanate be taken with food?

Yes. Current labeling directs patients to take it at the start of a meal.

Why is clavulanate added to amoxicillin?

Clavulanate blocks certain beta-lactamase enzymes that can inactivate amoxicillin and cause bacterial resistance.

Can different tablet strengths be substituted for each other?

Not automatically. Different strengths contain different amoxicillin-to-clavulanate ratios, so substitution depends on the exact prescribed formulation.
