How Does Ambien Promote Sleep?

Zolpidem binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor complexes at benzodiazepine-related binding sites. This increases inhibitory signaling in the central nervous system and produces sedative effects that shorten the time needed to fall asleep. Ambien is intended for sleep initiation rather than treatment of every type of sleep disturbance.

Who Is Ambien Prescribed For?

Ambien is labeled for short-term treatment of adults with insomnia marked by difficulty falling asleep. Clinical trials used for efficacy assessment lasted about four to five weeks. The medicine is not recommended for patients younger than 18. Persistent insomnia after 7 to 10 days calls for reassessment for medical or psychiatric conditions contributing to sleep problems.

How Should Ambien Be Taken at Bedtime?

Ambien is taken once per night immediately before bedtime with at least seven to eight hours remaining before planned waking. The initial dose is 5 mg for women and 5 or 10 mg for men. The total dose should not exceed 10 mg nightly. Taking it with or immediately after a meal slows the onset of action.

Which Serious Risks Are Linked to Ambien?

Ambien carries a boxed warning for complex sleep behaviors such as sleepwalking and sleep-driving that have caused serious injury and death. Other concerns include next-day impairment, abnormal behavior, worsening depression, respiratory depression, severe allergic reactions, withdrawal symptoms, and dependence. Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants increase sedation and impairment.
