What Is AlloDerm Placement?

AlloDerm placement is the surgical use of a processed human donor skin graft called an acellular dermal matrix. The processing removes donor cells while leaving a tissue framework that can support a repair. Surgeons may use it for selected soft tissue reconstruction procedures.

When Is AlloDerm Considered?

A surgeon may consider AlloDerm when damaged or inadequate soft tissue needs repair or additional support. Its use depends on the surgical site, available tissue, and planned technique. Some reconstructive breast procedures use an acellular dermal matrix, but it is not required for every reconstruction.

How Is AlloDerm Placed?

The surgeon prepares the recipient area and positions the graft where tissue support or coverage is needed. Stitches secure it to nearby tissue as part of the larger operation. Placement details differ between surgical procedures.

What Happens During Recovery?

Recovery follows the instructions for the operation in which AlloDerm was placed. The team checks the incision and watches for fluid buildup or signs of infection. Healing also depends on the condition of the surrounding tissue.

What Are the Risks and Limitations?

Possible problems include infection, fluid collection, wound separation, and failure of the graft. Donor screening and tissue processing reduce the risk of disease transmission but cannot eliminate it completely. The graft does not remove the risks of the larger reconstructive operation.

Frequently Asked Questions About AlloDerm Placement

Is AlloDerm synthetic?

No. It is processed tissue made from donated human skin. Donor cells are removed during processing.

Is AlloDerm a breast implant?

No. It is a tissue graft rather than an implant filled with saline or silicone. It may be used alongside an implant in some reconstructive procedures.

Does every breast reconstruction use AlloDerm?

No. Reconstruction can be performed using several techniques and materials. The surgeon decides whether an acellular dermal matrix fits the specific operation.

Can the graft develop problems after placement?

Yes. Infection, fluid buildup, or wound problems can affect the graft. Some complications require additional treatment or removal.
