How Does Alfuzosin Improve Urine Flow?

Alfuzosin blocks postsynaptic alpha1-adrenergic receptors in the prostate, bladder base, bladder neck, prostatic capsule, and prostatic urethra. Blocking these receptors relaxes smooth muscle in the lower urinary tract. This decreases resistance to urine flow and reduces BPH symptoms such as weak stream, difficulty starting urination, and incomplete bladder emptying.

Who Is Alfuzosin Prescribed For?

Alfuzosin extended-release tablets are approved for adult men with signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The medicine is not approved to treat high blood pressure and is not indicated for pediatric patients. A clinician also considers other causes of urinary symptoms, including prostate cancer, before or during treatment.

How Should Alfuzosin Tablets Be Taken?

The recommended dose is one 10 mg extended-release tablet once daily with food and with the same meal each day. Taking alfuzosin without food lowers drug absorption. Tablets are swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed. The medicine is contraindicated with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors and in people with moderate or severe liver impairment.

What Safety Problems Are Linked to Alfuzosin?

Alfuzosin can cause postural low blood pressure, dizziness, and fainting, especially when treatment begins or when used with blood pressure medicines or nitrates. Other concerns include QT prolongation, worsening angina, and intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery. Caution is needed with severe kidney impairment and mild liver impairment.
