A sympathomimetic is a medicine or substance that produces effects similar to activation of the sympathetic nervous system. It can stimulate alpha or beta adrenergic receptors, increase release of norepinephrine, reduce norepinephrine reuptake, or combine these actions. Effects can include a faster heart rate, stronger heart contraction, wider airways, or narrowed blood vessels. What Are Sympathomimetics Used For?

Sympathomimetics are used for conditions requiring rapid support of breathing, circulation, or alertness. Epinephrine is used for anaphylaxis and cardiac arrest, while norepinephrine and related agents support blood pressure in selected shock states. Beta-2 agonists such as albuterol open narrowed airways, and decongestants such as pseudoephedrine reduce nasal swelling. Selected central stimulants are used for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or narcolepsy.

How Do Sympathomimetics Work?

Direct-acting sympathomimetics bind to adrenergic receptors and activate them. Indirect-acting agents increase the amount of norepinephrine or another catecholamine available at nerve endings. Mixed-acting medicines combine direct receptor stimulation with increased neurotransmitter release. What Types of Sympathomimetics Are There?
