What Is a Sympathomimetic?
A sympathomimetic is a medicine or substance that produces effects similar to activation of the sympathetic nervous system. It can stimulate alpha or beta adrenergic receptors, increase release of norepinephrine, reduce norepinephrine reuptake, or combine these actions. Effects can include a faster heart rate, stronger heart contraction, wider airways, or narrowed blood vessels. Examples include epinephrine, norepinephrine, phenylephrine, albuterol, pseudoephedrine, and selected stimulant medicines.
