What Is A Slab-Off in Optics?
Slab-off, also called bicentric grinding, is a lens technique that adds base-up prism to one lens to correct vertical imbalance at near. The imbalance often occurs in anisometropia, where prescriptions differ between eyes, especially in bifocals. By introducing controlled prism along a visible line, slab-off aligns images to reduce double vision and neck strain. It is applied to the more minus or less plus lens in most cases. Accurate measurements ensure comfortable, single vision at reading distance.
