What Percentage of People With Severe Dry Eye Have Underlying Autoimmune Disease?
Dry eye disease is often treated as a simple surface problem, but for many, it is the first sign of a serious systemic illness. Clinical studies indicate that approximately 10 percent to 15 percent of all dry eye patients?and up to 30 percent of those with severe symptoms?have an underlying autoimmune disease. The most common connection is with Sjogren's Syndrome, but significant overlaps also exist with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus. Identifying these patients early is critical because their dry eye will not improve until their entire immune system is managed.
