The Mechanism: Prostaglandins and Melanin

People with pure blue eyes (very little melanin) generally see no change because there is no pigment to stimulate. Permanent vs. Reversible Side Effects

This skin darkening is typically reversible and fades weeks after stopping the product. In contrast, iris darkening is permanent. Once the brown pigment has been deposited in the iris, it will not fade, even if you stop using the serum immediately.

However, many over-the-counter (OTC) beauty serums contain synthetic prostaglandin analogs (often listed as "isopropyl cloprostenate" on the ingredients list). Because these are sold as cosmetics rather than drugs, they do not always carry the same strict warning labels, yet they function via the exact same biological mechanism and carry a similar risk profile.

Minimizing Risk Through Application

The likelihood of this side effect is directly linked to how much product enters the eye. The glaucoma data (1.5% risk) comes from drops placed inside the eye. Cosmetic applicators are designed to keep the product on the skin. Using the smallest effective amount and blotting any excess serum from the corner of the eye prevents the liquid from rolling into the eye, thereby statistically reducing the chance of the iris absorbing the drug.

FAQs on Lash Serum Safety

Will my blue eyes turn brown?

It is highly unlikely. Clinical studies show that pure blue eyes are almost immune to this side effect because they lack the melanin required to darken. The risk is almost exclusively for eyes that already contain some brown or yellow pigment.

Does castor oil cause this?
