How Many People Have "Perfect" Pitch Black Night Vision?
Biologically, 0% of the human population possesses "true" night vision (the ability to see in absolute darkness). Unlike infrared cameras or nocturnal animals like vipers, the human eye is a passive sensor that requires reflected photons to create an image. If the ambient light level drops to 0 lux, every human is functionally blind. However, in conditions of "scotopic" (dim) light, the human eye is incredibly sensitive. At its absolute physiological limit, a healthy human eye can detect a flash of light containing as few as 5 to 14 photons. This is equivalent to seeing a candle flame flickering from 30 miles (48 km) away on a clear, dark night.
