How Many People Experience Synesthesia Involving Color?
While synesthesia was once considered extremely rare, modern research indicates it is surprisingly common. Current estimates suggest that roughly 4% of the general population possesses some form of synesthesia. Among these, color-related forms are the most prevalent. Specifically, Grapheme-Color Synesthesia, where letters or numbers trigger a specific color photism, accounts for nearly 60% of all cases. This means that approximately 1% to 2% of the global population consistently sees specific colors when reading black text. The trait appears to be slightly more common in females and left-handed individuals.
